A study on meaning of communication with God focused on the Shamanism

Abstract

In this paper, the ritual situations where humans and spirits meet are closely reviewed, taking in Seoul-gut as the subject of this study in order to confirm the force that backs up the existence of Korean shamanism even in this modern society. Ancestral spirit is godhood or divinity that exists on the ground of universal consciousness toward ancestors inherent in Korean, and is a “Gutgeori”, rooted in the general nature of consciousness with regard to such ancestral spirits.
It is thought that was mainly performed in the latter part of “Gut.”, however, in recent days, this appears to be performed in a row right after and in Seoul-gut where “Gongsu” is delivered. So then, this ritual sequence plays a role in consolidating the belief in the “Gut” that has been performed in that day by giving “Gongsu”to “Jaegajip”, the ritual organizer who has invited the shaman and is responsible for the ritual following the two previous ritual cycles. This becomes the basis for the latter half of Gut that is performed continuously after those ritual sequences, which is to be shifted toward a more entertainment-oriented concept. In addition, in “Josangeori,” not only more specific and varied “Gongsu” than any other “Gutgeori” are delivered, but also this is a ritual ceremony that provides with an occasion to soothe heart and emotional addiction making the feelings of “Jaegajip” high and energized by appearance of dead ancestors.“Gut”is an encounter between spirits and humans. The experience, so called communications with spirits through “Gut” will be an opportunity to make changes in human mind eventually, and “Gut” will lead people to change their attitude toward their lives in the end.
